JONATHAN HAYES O’QUIN

February 16, 2021

It is with a heavy, heavy heart that we write a few words about our loving son, husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin and nephew, Jonathan Hayes O’quin. Jonathan was born in Abingdon to Hayes and Cassie O’quin on September 10, 1980.

Jonathan was a 1998 graduate of Haysi High School, a disabled coal miner and member of Clinchco Fire Department. He was owner of Flannagan Marina and Roo’s Stop & Shop. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and ATV riding and was of the Old Regular Baptist Faith.

A tragedy took his life at 40 years of age on February 8, 2021.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Elder Ervin O’quin; maternal grandparents, Leonard “Dock” and Sophia Mullins; and his extra special, much loved Uncle, Harbin O’quin.

Survivors in addition to his parents Hayes O’quin and Cassie Mullins O’quin of Haysi; his wife, Ashley Nicole O’quin of Haysi; daughters, Adrianna Roth and Madison O’quin of Haysi; sons, Isaiah Romans of Norfolk, Jonathan Tyler O’quin, Zachary O’quin, and Anthony Roth, all of Haysi; brother, David Bryan O’quin and his wife Krista of Haysi.

Jonathan is also survived by his paternal grandmother Bertha O’quin of Haysi; in-laws, James and Andrea Rosa and David Riley; sister-in-law, Alicia Richardson and her husband Jeremy; niece, Kenley O’quin; nephews, Avery and Archer O’quin and Lucas Stables. Also mourning his loss are aunts, uncles and cousins and many friends. He was called Uncle Jon by his niece and nephews. They looked forward to visiting with him at the Marina, where Uncle Jon would treat them to candy and ice cream.

Jonathan was a friendly, well-liked child who strived to do his best. He was active in the Boy Scouts and achieved the honor of being an Eagle Scout at age 12; the youngest to achieve this rank in his District. Jonathan had natural talents and skills, along with a keen mind and intelligence.

Jonathan’s algebra teacher, Mr. David Sutherland, relayed this story to Jonathan’s Dad. Mr. Sutherland said that some of the other students asked him why Jonathan was allowed to sleep during class. Mr. Sutherland’s answer was that when they could consistently make A’s, he would allow them to sleep too.

After marriage and children, Jonathan worked hard to be a good breadwinner. He loved his family and wanted to provide a good life for them. As most people know, the best paying job in this area is to be a coal miner. Jonathan was always ready to work extra shifts or do extra work to be able to provide well for his family. He looked ahead to the future and took classes to increase his value to the coal company and obtain job security. Jonathan obtained multiple permits and certifications/licenses, always being one of the top students in the classes. He had one of the highest grades in passing his electrical state license. Jonathan not only had an intelligent mind, he had skills as well. His mining Boss commented that you only had to show Jonathan how to do something one time and then he was able to master it. Jonathan was talented at carpentry and had multiple mechanical and electrical skills.

Jonathan was interested and took an active role in his children’s life. He coached Little League Programs for several years and was busy with any tasks needed, such as mowing and preparing the field.

After the coal mining injury left him disabled and a major ATV accident, Jonathan’s road to recovery was long and hard.
Jonathan still wanted to give to others and be a productive member of the community, volunteering his time with the Clinchco Fire Department. He had many supportive friends in the department and his family truly appreciates them.

Just before his death, Jonathan called his Dad. He asked his Mom and Dad to tell each of his children that he loved them, and that he was sorry. Last words spoken were “I appreciate you Dad and I love you.”
