Appalachian Agency CARES — program helps caregivers of those with dementia and Alzheimer’s

October 13, 2020

Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens realizes that caring for someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s at home can often be a stressful and overwhelming undertaking. That’s why they offer a program that helps caregivers understand the disease and provides them assistance in caring for their loved ones.

As a caregiver, you may find yourself in a new and unfamiliar role. You may be unsure of where to go for information, anxious about what to expect as the disease progresses and concerned about your ability to support the person living with dementia.

“I want the community to know about our program and how we are available to alleviate the burden of caring for someone with dementia,” said Eva Musick, AASC CARES program counselor. “I want people to know that we are here to help them navigate a path through this disease and that there are many resources available to help them do just that.”

Musick is credentialed as a Dealing with Dementia Trainer and a Dementia Friends Champion.

The Caregiver Assistance & Relief Education Services program provides in-home counseling and support to help educate caregivers in strategies to help manage the behavioral challenges that come along with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Educational materials are provided, as well as regular follow-up visits and tools to help manage the effects of dementia and ease the burden on the caregiver. The CARES program counselor can offer information on community resources that are available to help support both the individual and caregiver in remaining healthy and happy at home.

If you are caring for an individual who is 60 and older with a diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer’s, or someone under 60 with a diagnosis of early-onset dementia, and live in Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell or Tazewell County, then you are eligible for the CARES program.
