SRAE provides adults a pathway to college and careers
Southwest Regional Adult Education (SRAE) provides quality continuing adult education for motivated and undereducated adults in the counties of Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell, and Tazewell. SRAE provides adults with or without a high school-level credential a pathway to college and careers. Adults can enter the program to improve basic math and literacy skills or to earn a GED® certificate, industry recognized certificates, a National Career Readiness Certificate, or a Microsoft Digital Literacy Certificate.
Under present circumstances of the COVID-19 Pandemic, SRAE offers either face-to-face or distance learning opportunities which are both tuition-free. Free GED® testing is available to those who qualify.
Adult education programs impact the lives of our citizens, encourage parents to be full partners in the education of their children, and are an investment in the future of our communities.
SRAE delivers instruction in several different areas. Adult Basic Education and Literacy consists of instructional programs that provide basic skills for adults who are performing below the ninth grade level in reading, writing, mathematics, and other basic skills. Many of these activities include pre-GED® preparatory components.
Adult Secondary Education and GED® Test Preparation serve learners performing between the ninth and twelfth grade levels. GED® test preparatory programs assess an adult’s knowledge in core subject areas (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies) and prescribe instruction to prepare learners for success on the four GED® subject tests.
Integrated Education and Training (IET) programs are recognized career pathways programs that provide adult learners with contextualized curriculum integrated with technical workplace skills training as a means to prepare for entry-level jobs in targeted industries.
ParaPro Teacher Aide Exam Preparation Program is offered for individuals who want to become a paraprofessional (teacher’s aide, teacher’s assistant, instructional assistant). The Virginia Board of Education has approved the ETS Praxis ParaPro Assessment as the formal state academic paraprofessional assessment. Preparation for this assessment is available free of charge through SRAE.
National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) is based on an individual’s performance on three WorkKeys® skills assessments: Workplace Documents, Applied Mathematics, and Graphic Literacy. Scores on these assessments determine the certificate level of bronze, silver, gold, or platinum that an individual can earn. The NCRC gives individuals proof that they possess the skills employers deem essential for workplace success.
Microsoft Digital Literacy teaches and assesses basic computer concepts and skills so that people can use computer technology in everyday life to develop new social and economic opportunities for themselves, their families, and their communities. A certificate is awarded upon completion of this program.
