Have you ever wondered why there is such a need for adult education in our nation? Here are some facts from COABE (Coalition on Adult Basic Education) that demonstrate the need and value of adult education and family literacy in our communities.
1.More than 36 million Americans can’t read or write at the most basic level while 60 million lack basic math skills, as well as the credentials and skills necessary to succeed in post-secondary education.
2.Every year, one in three young adults drops out of high school.
3.The American Action Forum estimated that by 2020, America would be short an estimated 7.5 million private sector workers across all skill levels.
4.Sixty-five percent of all jobs in 2020 will require some level of postsecondary education.
5.Low-skilled adults are two times as likely to be unemployed.
6.Low-skilled adults are three times as likely to be in poverty.
7.Low skilled adults are four times as likely to be in poor health.
8.Low-skilled adults are eight times as likely to be incarcerated.
9.1.5 million students are enrolled in adult education programs nationwide.
10.A person with a high school diploma or equivalent earns an average of $9,620 more per year than a non-graduate.
