LORA ANITA SWINDALL HIBBITTS

Lora Anita Swindall Hibbitts, age 99, of Abingdon, was born on January 24, 1921 at Norland. She was the youngest of ten children born to Milburn E. and Ardelia Austin Swindall. She was predeceased by her parents and all of her siblings; brothers, Ted, Arnold, Bruce, Bob, Vernon and Jack and sisters Hetty Sutherland, Flora Willis and Zona Powers. She was also predeceased by her husband, Cecil Hibbitts who she married on June 29, 1960 and by her son Michael Hibbitts. She passed away on August 2, 2020 at Commonwealth Senior Living in Abingdon.

Reverend J.C. Swindall, Anita’s grandfather gave her the nickname of Bett and she became known as Bett or Betty where she grew up and Aunt Betty to her nieces and nephews. She was a special aunt to many of her nieces and nephews always doing fun things with them.

Anita graduated from DMHS in 1938 and Emory and Henry College in 1942. She taught at Clintwood High School for many years and was a much loved teacher who touched the lives of many of her students.

Following her marriage, Anita moved to Michigan and lived there until 2000 when she moved to Clintwood. In 2010, she moved to Abingdon where she lived with her nephew Douglas Swindall and his wife Cathy.

Anita is survived by her special niece Brenda Swindall and nephew Douglas Swindall and wife Cathy who were her special caregivers. Other survivors are 5 nieces and 4 nephews.

Due to COVID 19, there will be a graveside service on Wednesday, August 5 at 12:30 p.m. at the Hibbitts Cemetery on Georges Fork. Please meet at Clintwood Colley Funeral Home at noon to travel to the cemetery. Masks are required. Pallbearers will be Richard and Matthew Harris and Shawn and Ryan Reynolds. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
