Registration for 4-H Pullet Project and the Mini-garden Project underway
This time of uncertainty has presented new obstacles to navigate, Virginia Cooperative Extension remains committed to serving our communities. The delivery method may have to be altered to allow for social distancing, but services and projects will continue. To compensate for the limited office hours, we may still be reached by phone, e-mail and video conferencing by appointment. For any 4-H related questions, please contact Kelly Rose at rosek@vt.edu or 276-207-1864.
The Dickenson County 4-H program is currently taking registrations for the 4-H Pullet Project and the Mini-garden Project.
What is the 4-H Pullet Project?
The 4-H Pullet project engages youth in learning life skills while having fun raising chickens. Participating Dickenson County 4-H Club members that return this registration form will receive 10 baby chicks to raise. They will be Golden Comets or Black sex-link type (Rhode Island Crossed Barred Rock) and they both make good layers or broilers.
How the project works:
You will receive 10 pullets (day old chicks) to care for (keep the pullets safe from bad weather, pets, raccoons, snakes, opossums, etc.). You will raise these chicks for about 20 weeks and give back 3 of your best pullets. We will have a special show and sale where you can win prizes at the Dickenson Extension Fair. The money from this sale will be yours to keep! The project fee is $30 and is limited to the first 10 participants.
You will need: Brood Lamp, Brood Box, Chick Feeders & Waterers and Chick Starter/Grower.
We will give you:
1.10 pullets
2.“How to Grow Blue Ribbon Pullets.”
3.Project Record Sheets (to be completed by September 30, 2020).
Completion of project records is required.
What is the Mini-garden Project?
Participants will receive plants/seeds from a variety of vegetable plants to grow in their own garden of approximately 10’ X 16’. Members will be responsible for monitoring growth and success of their vegetables in a recorded book. The project record will be judged; gift certificates will be awarded for 1st– 3rd place. All participants must complete a project record book. This project is open to participants between age 7—18 or within 3rd—12th grade; participants must be a Dickenson County resident to qualify for this project. Once registered, participants will be notified when supplies are ready for pick-up and appointments will be scheduled. Registration is limited for this project and will close on May 1.
