What is the 4-H Pullet Project? The 4-H Pullet project engages youth in learning life skills while having fun raising chickens. The Dickenson County 4-H Club will give participating 4-H Club members 10 baby chicks to raise. The chicks will be Golden Comets or Black sex-link type (Rhode Island crossed Barred Rock) and they both make good layers or broilers.
You will receive 10 pullets (day old chicks) to care for (keep the pullets safe from bad weather, pets, raccoons, snakes, opossums, etc.). You will raise these chicks for about 20 weeks and give back three of your best pullets. We will have a special show and sale where you can win prizes at the Dickenson Extension Fair. The money from this sale will be yours to keep! The project fee is $30 and is limited to the first 10 participants.
You will receive – 10 pullets, “How to Grow Blue Ribbon Pullets” publication and project record sheets to be completed by September 30, 2020.
You will need a brood lamp, brood box, chick feeders and waterers and chick starter/grower.
It will be the responsibility of the participants to bring three of their best pullets to the show and sale during the Dickenson Extension Fair (we will let you know the date).
If you have a school age child (elementary thru high school) who would like to participate in this project, please contact the Dickenson County Extension Office at 926-4605. Sign up as soon as possible; chicks should be available after April 22.
If you are a person with a disability and desire assistance or accommodation to participate in this activity, please notify the Dickenson County Extension Office at 926-4605 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. TDD number is 800/828-1120.
