FRED BALLARD O’QUINN

Fred Ballard O’Quinn, age 85, of Birchleaf, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at Dickenson Community Hospital. Born in Dickenson County, he was a son of the late Robert and Nellie Carrie O’Quinn. He was a coal miner and of the Primitive Baptist Faith. He was an avid banjo picker and a founder of Bluegrass Travelers along with his sons, Keith and Kyle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Rasnake O’Quinn; a sister, Agnes Barton; brothers, Warren, Harvey, Alfred, Harding and Wayne O’Quinn and a daughter-in-law, Sue O’Quinn.

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda (Elder Hoey) Lester of Birchleaf; two sons, Keith O’Quinn of Bee and Kyle O’Quinn of Birchleaf; nine grandchildren; Tim (Ladonna) O’Quinn, Hope (Doug) Barton, Cora (James) Jones, Regina (Tracy) Deel, Jennifer (Brad) Taylor, Jonathan (Chasity) Deel, Dusty (Pilar) O’Quinn, Andy O’Quinn, and Elizabeth (Jonathan) Stout, and 22 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Friday, February 28, 2020 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Garnell Gilbert, Jim Duty, and Hoey Lester officiating. Burial followed in the O’Quinn Cemetery, Steves Branch. Pallbearers were Anthony O’Quinn, Randy O’Quinn, Jim Deel, Jonathan Deel, Tim O’Quinn, and Doug Barton. The family received friends after 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 27 at the funeral home where a song service was held at 7 p.m. Online condolences may be sent to www.haysifuneral.com.
