Dickenson County youth participate in 4-H day at the Capital
4-H Day at the Capitol is designed to enhance youth knowledge of governmental procedures and emphasize the importance of citizen involvement in the governmental process. It provides the opportunity to strengthen communication, leadership and other citizenship skills; understand the importance of civic and social responsibilities as they relate to the development of better citizens and leaders; exchange ideas, practice respect and form friendships with other youth of diverse backgrounds as well as experience hands-on learning. On February 3 and 4, two Dickenson County 4-H participants had the opportunity to observe the legislative process in action, meet with the 4th District Delegate William Wampler III, and tour the historical home of Thomas Jefferson, Monticello.
Amy Mullins is a senior at Ridgeview High School and she has been involved in 4-H for the past eight years. She has participated in Junior 4-H Camp, became a counselor in training and finally served as a camp counselor. Other 4-H projects include Share the Fun, State Congress, and she has been the Teen Leader President for the past two years. She was also the 2019 Highest Achieving 4-Her in Dickenson CountyShe frequently volunteers to assist with other Virginia Cooperative Extension Programs. Amy is the Vice-President of the Ridgeview Chapter of Future Farmers of America, Secretary of the Key Club, Secretary/Treasurer of the National Honor Society and the varsity cheer captain. After graduation, she plans to attend the Appalachian School of Pharmacy.
Shaye Baker is a junior at Ridgeview High School and she has been involved in 4-H for the past 6 years. She has been a camper, counselor in training, and a camp counselor. Other 4-H projects include public speaking and she is the current Treasurer of the 4-H Teen Leaders Club. Shaye has attended the Virginia Tech Science Festival for the past three years and frequently volunteers to help with community service projects. She is on the varsity cheer squad and is currently in the Nursing Assistant Program to earn her CNA. Her future career goals include becoming an elementary school teacher.
