Two from Clintwood snagged in mass drug roundup across Wise, Lee counties

Two people from Clintwood were among 65 people targeted in a mass arrest operation stretching across Lee and Wise counties.

According to a list provided by Wise County Commonwealth Attorney Chuck Slemp, Dickenson County residents scheduled for arrest and their charges include:

• Wendy Leigh Dunford, 27, Clintwood: Two counts of distributing methamphetamine; one count of conspiracy to distribute meth; and

• Christopher Joseph Evans, 28, Clintwood: Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Slemp announced Oct. 29 that officers from several police agencies launched the operation early that morning. The suspects were recently indicted by the multi-jurisdictional grand jury at Wise. The arrests stem from an extensive investigation by the Southwest Virginia Regional Narcotics Task Force involving illegal drug activity in Wise County.

More than 125 drug charges are involved, including nearly 100 felony charges involving the distribution, manufacture and possession of methamphetamine, Slemp said. Additionally, 38 of the cases involve diversion of the prescription drug buprenorphine.

Participating agencies included the Wise County Sheriff's Department, Virginia State Police, the Norton Police Department, the Lee County Sheriff’s Department, the Coeburn Police Department and the Wise Police Department.

Others named include:

• Brianna Nichole Meade, 20, Coeburn: Two counts of distributing buprenorphine; conspiracy; distributing within 1,000 feet of a school.

• Gary Wayne Forney, 53, Coeburn: Distributing meth.

• Cody Lee Salyers, 26, Coeburn: Distributing methamphetamine.

• Joseph Wade Ballard, 36, Coeburn: Distributing methamphetamine.

• Quentin Randall Sloan, 51, Coeburn: Distributing methamphetamine.

• Ashley Pauline Gaulke, 33, Coeburn: Distributing methamphetamine and conspiracy to do so.

• Kristy Cordella Lee Hemphill, 34, Coeburn: Distributing methamphetamine and conspiracy to do so.

• Martin James Hemphill, 44, Coeburn: Distributing methamphetamine and conspiracy to do so.

• Rodney A. Pickett, 46, Coeburn: One count of possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute; one count of possessing buprenorphine with intent to distribute.
