JACK DEMPSEY OWENS

Jack Dempsey Owens, age 71, of Haysi, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at Norton Community Hospital in Norton. Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late Jake and Cara Owens. He was an active member of Splashdam Freewill Baptist Church. He loved his church family and serving the Lord. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, a retired coal miner of Pittston Coal Company and member of Local UMWA #7170. He loved fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by half- brothers, Kermit, Arnold, Basil and Gerlene Owens, half-sisters, Orbie Owens, Carrie Arrington, Versal Davis and Kelsey Hawk.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Alivia “Libby” Miles Owens; a daughter, Rebecca (Jessie) Thomas; a son, Keaton (Sarah) Owens; grandchildren, Sagan Boyd, Kendra Boyd, Alivia Jo (AJ) Boyd, Juliet Owens, Jacob Owens and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday, October 13, 2019 at Splashdam Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Danny Sluss officiating. Burial followed in Sykes-Miles Cemetery, Haysi. Dickenson County VFW Post #7360 conducted military graveside rites. Pallbearers were Jessie Thomas, Chris Lawson, Carson Lawson Jr., Vincent Marshall, Keaton Owens and Kenny Mullins. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Davis, Larry Vitatoe, Doug Boyd, Danny Yates, Junior Arrington and Deacons of Splashdam Church. The family received friends after 6 p.m. Saturday, at the church with an evening service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to CurePSP, 1216 Broadway, 2nd floor, New York, NY 10001.
