The splash dam foundation, shown here, was built in 1909 by the Yellow Poplar Lumber Co. and loomed a reported 100 feet from the river floor. It was so sound that it was used by the Commonwealth of Virginia as the foundation for the bridge that is now in its place. PHOTO BY TERESA MULLINS
