A concrete pier with the name ‘SID COUNTS’ etched in its surface can still be found near the site of the 80-foot Nealy Ridge fire tower once used to spot forest fires in the area. The tower, long gone from the site, was last manned in the late 1960s. DENNIS REEDY PHOTO.
