RUTH CAMPBELL

August 24, 2023

Ruth Campbell, 86, of Jefferson City, Tn. passed away peacefully on Monday, August 14, 2023 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.

Ruth was a life-long avid reader, gardener, and music lover. A devoted Christian daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend; Ruth’s life epitomized the biblical ideal presented in Proverbs 31. “Strength and dignity are her clothing… She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.”

Ruth was born in Clintwood, during the Great Depression; a coal miner’s daughter. She thrived in the beautiful and challenging mountain life of Appalachia. Upon graduating from Clintwood High School, she worked successfully for many years at both the Potomac Electric Power Company and Teledyne Corporation. Ruth spent the bulk of her adult life creating a wonderful home; lovingly raising and caring for her immediate and extended family. Always active in her church, she was a member of various Women’s groups and always sang in the Choir. She had a beautiful gospel voice that resonated like the crystal mountain streams of her childhood.

Ruth is survived by her loving children, Dawn Johnson and Rack Campbell; her three grandchildren, Brooke Sword, Brwyan Campbell, and Aaron Campbell; four great-granddaughters, Evelynn, Madeline, Kora and Lilly Campbell; her brother, Ray Short (Helen); as well as numerous nieces and nephews, who will miss her.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; her father, Teddy “Earl” Short; her mother, Lydia Cox Short; her brothers, Milford Clarence Short and Jonah Short; and her sisters, Shirley Orr and Oma Renninger.

The family would like to thank the dedicated nurses and staff of Charter Senior Living for their care of mom over the years.

A graveside service was held August 21, at 11 a.m. at Culpeper National Cemetery.

The family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association. Online guest book is available at covenantfuneralservice.com.
