AVERY WILLIAM PHIPPS

Avery William Phipps age 90, passed away at home with his loving family by his side, Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023. The son of the late Lloyd and Stella Mullins Phipps he graduated school in Clintwood. He went on to serve his country in the U. S. Air Force in Korea, then serving in Vietnam, later assigned to detail with Air Force One and finished duty at Pentagon as security officer. Returning home to Clintwood he worked with Dickenson County Sheriff’s office and Clinchfield Coal Security. He worked with Johnson-Mullins Chevrolet and retired as Sheriff of Dickenson County.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Timothy and Randy; brothers, Vernon, Sylvester, Clifford, Chester and James Phipps and sisters, Bertha Mullins, Elmira Smith and Irene Haynes.
He is survived by wife Katherine Phipps; one son, David Phipps of Clintwood; two grandchildren, Michael Phipps (Loretta) and Jennifer Phipps; great-grandchildren, Isabella, Peyton, and Sadie Phipps; brothers, Lester Phipps, Kyle Phipps, Ron Phipps and wife, Sheila and Paul Phipps and wife, Barbara, all of Clintwood; three sisters, Mary Deel, Martha Musick, and Lorene Corder and several nieces, nephews and host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Avery W. Phipps were conducted at 6 p.m. Monday Feb. 20, 2023 Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel with Frank Hall officiating. Burial followed with a graveside service on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023 at 1 p.m. Phipps Family Cemetery, Fairview Road, Clintwood. Pallbearers were family and friends.
