JAMES HANSEL “HANK” VIERS

James Hansel “Hank” Viers, age 82 of 5th Avenue passed away Saturday, September 24, 2022 at his home.  Born in Dickenson County he was a son of the late Henry Talton and Alpha Stanley Viers. Hank worked at Chevrolet in Michigan before moving back to Virginia to drive a coal truck, partner in a furniture store and then work for Dickenson County in the courthouse as the maintenance man. He was a member of Lick Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

Hank loved to work on watches and sell them but gave more away than he sold.  He loved life and the Lord and he loved his family, all of his nephews and nieces.  He would help anyone.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Naomi Evans Viers; a brother, Edgar Viers; and sisters, Nina Ruth Viers, Thelma McKnight, Juanita Christian and Lois Hess.

Survivors include his wife and loving companion, Thelma Gartin Viers; a nephew, Larry (Deborah) McKnight; a sister, Lula Gay McNeil; lifelong friend, Carrol Turner; step-sons, Lewis Gartin, Scott (Patti) Gartin, Bradley Gartin, Jason (Brigette) Gartin; granddaughters, Rebecca Gartin and Brooklyn Gartin; sisters-in-law, Rhonda (Roger) Deel, Evelyn (Tony) Hercula, Lana (Phil) Olling, Wilma Stiltner and Tracy (Yancy) Hess and brothers-in-law, Ricky Deel and Tommy (Cindy) Deel.

Funeral service were conducted 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elder, Garnell Gilbert officiating.  A visitation started at 6 p.m. prior to funeral service.  Graveside services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2022 in the Viers Cemetery, Clinchco with Elder, Jim duty officiating. Pallbearers will be Larry McKnight Jr., William McKnight, Larry McKnight, Travis Deel and Ricky Deel.  Honorary pallbearers will be Carrol Turner and members of Lick Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
