BESSIE BROWNING HILL

Bessie Browning Hill went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Clintwood.
Bessie was born on June 2, 1920, the daughter of Lena and Tivis Browning. She spent nearly all of her 101 years in Dickenson County. On December 24, 1938, she married Fitzhugh Hill, son of Charles and Cara Hill. Bessie and Fitzhugh were married for 65 years when he passed away in 2003. Bessie loved her garden and working outside. She also loved to sew and made hundreds of potholders and aprons over the years. She also made many beautiful quilts for her family. Bessie attended Valley View Freewill Baptist Church and Lick Fork Freewill Baptist Church and loved the Lord with all her heart.

In addition to her parents and husband, Bessie was preceded in death by her daughter, Wilma Hill Porter; grandson, Gregory Porter; daughter in-law, Carolyn Hill; sisters, Eunice Dotson, Barbara Mullins, Lucille Mullins, Christine Mullins, Clersie Crabtree, and Opal Browning; brothers, Berlin Browning, Letcher Browning, Gerald Browning, and Carlyle Browning.

Bessie is survived by her sons, Gillis and Jan Hill, Charles and Brenda Hill, and Farris Hill; sister, Roseanne Apple; grandchildren, Mike (Christy) Porter, Barry Hill, Kena Hill, Dana Jeffrey (Pam) Hill, Shana (Mike) Clay, Jeff (Niki) Hill, Tonya (Chad) Slone, Amber (Matt) Stevenson, and Jeremy Hill; 22 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and other family members.

The family wishes to thank Anita Mullins, her friend and caregiver, for the compassion and devotion she showed Bessie.

Family received friends at Clintwood Funeral Home, Saturday, February 26, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., at which time funeral services were conducted by Pastors Lynn Vanover and Keith Dotson. Family and friends were requested to meet at Clintwood Funeral Home Sunday, February 27 at 10:30 a.m. to proceed to Hill Family Cemetery, Night Hawk Hill, Clintwood for a graveside service at 11 a.m. Pallbearers were grandsons and great-grandsons.
